**The 4 horsemen, visualized.** Criticism. Contempt. Defensiveness. [Stonewalling](https://vibelovely.com/meaning/stonewalling/). The four conflict patterns Dr. John Gottman’s 40+ years of couples research found most predictive of relationship breakdown. Each with its antidote, in one visual reference you can pin or save.

What’s in the visual
--------------------

**Horseman 1, Criticism.** Hallmark: “always” and “never” attached to a complaint. Hallmark example: “You always leave the dishes.” Antidote: gentle startup (specific behavior + specific request).

**Horseman 2, Contempt.** Hallmark: a position of moral superiority, sarcasm, eye-rolling, mocking, name-calling. The strongest single predictor of divorce in Gottman’s research. Antidote: a culture of appreciation built across daily life.

**Horseman 3, Defensiveness.** Hallmark: deflecting responsibility or counter-attacking. Antidote: take responsibility, even partial.

**Horseman 4, Stonewalling.** Hallmark: emotional and physical withdrawal during conflict. Usually flooding, not stubbornness. Antidote: physiological self-soothing + structured timed pause.

How they cascade
----------------

The horsemen tend to escalate in sequence: criticism → defensiveness → contempt → stonewalling. Catching the first one early prevents the cascade.
