A directory of grief support resources organized by US state. This page is a working reference for therapists, social workers, healthcare professionals, hospice programs, and grieving families looking for local bereavement resources. Each state section lists the major nonprofit organizations and the regional grief-counseling programs. It also covers children's bereavement camps, widow and widower support groups, and the hospice bereavement programs that offer free or sliding-scale support.
Updated quarterly.
If you are reading this because someone you love has died, I am so sorry. I built this page the way I wish someone had handed it to me. It is a calm, plain list of places that help, sorted so you can skip straight to your own state.
You do not have to read all of it. I have seen how exhausting early grief is, so find your state, pick one organization, and reach out when you are ready. That is enough for today.
National resources first (available everywhere):
- 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, if you are experiencing thoughts of self-harm or are in immediate emotional crisis, call or text 988 (US). Available 24/7. Free and confidential.
- CaringInfo from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (caringinfo.org), helps you find hospice and palliative care providers nationwide. Most hospice programs offer 13 months of free bereavement support to surviving family members of patients, often extended to other community members at sliding-scale rates.
- The Compassionate Friends (compassionatefriends.org), national support organization for families who have lost a child. Chapters in most US states.
- National Widowers' Organization (nationalwidowers.org), national peer-to-peer support for widowed men.
- Modern Widows Club (modernwidowsclub.org), national community for women who have been widowed, with local chapters.
- Camp Erin (Eluna) (elunanetwork.org), the largest network of bereavement camps for children and teens, with 35+ locations across the US.
- Soaring Spirits International (soaringspirits.org), community and resources for widowed people, with regional retreats and weekend programs.
- The Dougy Center (dougy.org), the National Grief Center for Children & Families. Founded in Portland, Oregon, with affiliates across the US and free grief reading for every age.
- Refuge in Grief (refugeingrief.com), Megan Devine’s online grief community, with courses, writing prompts, and a popular podcast.
Disclaimer (important)
One thing I want to be honest with you about up front: this directory is editorial, and it is not a substitute for clinical care. The resources below are nonprofit and community-based grief support organizations, not licensed therapists. If you are living with complicated grief or prolonged grief disorder, a licensed mental-health professional is the right kind of help. In my experience, that is not a sign of failing to cope, it is simply matching the right support to the weight you are carrying.
The American Psychological Association (locator.apa.org) maintains a national locator for licensed psychologists.
And if your loss was a suicide, please know you are not alone in it. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (afsp.org) keeps resources written specifically for you.
Resources by US state
Here is how I would use this part of the page. Scroll to your state, and if you do not see it yet, do not worry. Pick the closest national resource above, because almost all of them can route you to something local. When you do find your state, you do not need to contact every organization listed.
One call is a real first step.
A note on where this stands: eight states are populated so far. Our Sympathy Desk and Grief and Care editorial teams are building out the rest toward a full 50-state directory. If you know a regional resource that belongs here, please write to us at [email protected]. We read every message.

State directory expansion
The remaining states are being added by our Sympathy Desk team, and your help genuinely speeds this up. I have watched a single reader email turn into a whole new state listing, so please do not assume someone else will send it. If you want to submit a regional resource, email us at [email protected]. It helps if you can include a few basics.
List the organization name and its contact information, the type of support offered such as individual counseling, group support, or camp programs, and any cost or sliding-scale details.

For journalists and researchers citing this page
If you are citing this directory in your own work, here is the short version of what you need. It is an editorial resource, and every organization listed was verified when it was added. We update it quarterly, so please confirm a resource is current before you cite it. For the citation itself, you can use: “A directory of grief support resources by US state,” VibeLovely, accessed [your access date], plus the page URL.
If you need more context for a story, our sympathy guide is a good companion piece. You are also welcome to email us if you want to confirm a detail before you publish.
Last updated
We review this directory every quarter and add new state coverage with each refresh, so the page you are reading is current as of its latest update. If you spot something out of date, a resource that has closed, a broken link, or an organization we have missed, please tell us at [email protected]. If you also need help with the words, our guide on how to write a eulogy walks you through it.
And if you are supporting someone else through a loss, you might find our piece on when your closest friend’s mother dies helpful too. I truly believe that showing up, even imperfectly, matters more than finding the perfect words.
