Hard launch. The deliberate, unambiguous public introduction of a romantic partner on social media: an identifying photo, often accompanied by tagging or a caption that names the relationship. The counterpart to a soft launch (a hint without identification).
Where the term comes from
The framing entered Instagram and TikTok vocabulary in the early 2020s, with mainstream coverage stabilizing the hard launch versus soft launch distinction by 2022. The vocabulary is a direct semantic borrowing from product-marketing launches, applied to the social-presentation of relationships.
How it shows up in real life
A person and their partner have been together six months. The partner has appeared in the person's Instagram stories as an out-of-focus shoulder, a hand on a coffee cup, a blurry car-window reflection. Today, a posted carousel: face, name, tag. The choice is deliberate. The hard launch is the public, dated, archived statement that the relationship exists and is owned.
Common misuses
Hard-launching is sometimes treated as a relationship milestone that ought to happen by a certain timeline. Couples have a wide range of legitimate reasons to delay or skip the hard launch entirely: jobs that require discretion, blended families, prior public relationships still being managed, or simple preference for privacy. The launch is a choice, not an obligation.
